7 Tips for Extending the Life of Your Brakes
HOW TO Extend the Life of Your Vehicle’s Brakes
While there are many safety features in our vehicles, brakes may be the most important safety feature on every vehicle on the road. Brakes are the primary system for controlling speed as well as stopping a car, truck, SUV, etc. They prevent accidents and ensure the safety of drivers and passengers alike.
Proper maintenance can save you money in the long run and improve braking performance. In this blog, we’ll provide practical tips to help you prolong the life of your vehicle’s brakes.
1. Have Regular Brake Inspections
Bringing your vehicle to a mechanic for regular brake inspections can catch issues early, prevent unnecessary damage, and reduce long-term repair costs. If you notice your brake pedal going all the way to the floor, hear unusual noises when you apply the brakes, or feel vibrations, it may be time for an inspection and brake work.
2. Drive Smoothly
When you’re on the road, avoid sudden stops and aggressive driving. Your brakes will benefit from gradual acceleration and deceleration. Driving with your brakes in mind reduces strain on your brake components.
3. Use Engine Braking
Engine braking is a driving technique that allows you to slow down your vehicle by using the engine’s resistance instead of the brakes. To do this, limit the airflow to the engine, which creates a vacuum that slows down the pistons and crankshaft. In automatic cars, use the low or tow/haul mode to hold the transmission in a lower gear suitable for engine braking.
4. Maintain Proper Tire Pressure
There’s a direct connection between tire health and brake efficiency. Under-inflated tires cause the brakes to work harder when activated. Check tire pressure at least once a month with a reliable gauge, and be sure to inspect it before long trips or when temperatures change.
5. Use Quality Brake Parts
When your brakes are repaired or replaced, make sure the mechanic uses quality parts. While it’s tempting to save a few dollars, cheap parts don’t last as long as quality ones, and you’ll end up spending more because you'll need to replace them more often.
6. Avoid Overloading Your Vehicle
Excess weight increases wear and tear on your brakes. Avoid overloading your vehicle. Before loading, plan ahead: load heavier items first and keep them near the front, and place lighter items on top and toward the back. Be sure everything is secured and maintain balanced weight.
7. Schedule Regular Brake Fluid Checks and Replacements
Brake fluid is essential for your system’s performance. Old or contaminated fluid can reduce braking efficiency. It’s recommended to replace brake fluid every two to three years. Some signs that your brake fluid needs attention include warning lights and a "spongy" pedal.
